Tia’s Teaching Practice
Procedures of Teaching
Every lesson always starts with a sparking question related to the material to be learned today. Also, i started the teaching by giving the students some apperception of related topics to remind them what they have learned before, to prepare them for topics we’re about to learn. I show photos, videos and audio in between lessons to make the lessons more interesting and give them real-life examples.
Afterward, I gave them some quizzes or played games with them, so they wouldn’t get bored with the teaching. The core learning activities will begin with me explaining the material learned that day, and then after that, I will form them into groups and discuss them in groups. This learning is student-centered learning. After the discussion, each group will present the results of their discussion.
At the end of the lesson, the students and I will make a conclusion about what we learned today. After that, I tell what lesson will be learned at the next meeting. Before the lesson ends, I also always ask 'What lessons can be taken from today's material'.
Time Management and Organizing Activites
With only 40 minutes of teaching History Subject, time management is very crucial for every teacher. Luckily, the day before demo teaching my supervisor always holds a meeting with me and discusses what to do and what things should be in the lesson content. This really helped me to organize my activities and time. Besides that, I also practiced with my fellow delegates and roommates.
Problem-Solving
The only problem needs solving during my teaching was the language barrier. It’s hard to teach students History, it’s even harder to teach them in English. Especially the Vietnam students, which how they pronounce English differently. Sometimes there were students who didn’t really understand what I was saying so I had to twist my mind to come up with a solution.
Thankfully, there are some students kind enough to help me with this kind of problem, and on my slide show some hard words use bilingual english-viet. In addition, I was also accompanied by my supervisor so that he could translate the lessons into Vietnamese.
Classroom Management
Fortunately, all the classes I teach have students who listen to the lesson from beginning to end solemnly. Only occasionally did they lose focus, and I was able to easily get their focus back by giving them a few words of encouragement. I also add games and videos to the teaching and learning activities so that they become more focused.
Others
At the beginning of the lesson I always introduce myself in Vietnamese, I think this will create a feeling of excitement when they hear me speak Vietnamese. During the lesson, I also often use Vietnamese-English words on words that I think they find difficult to understand so that the lesson objectives can be achieved. They can also answer my questions in Vietnamese, so they are not afraid to show themselves during the lesson.
